Moss agate is a gemstone renowned for the greenish filaments that seem to resemble creeping moss or other vegetation within the heart of the stones. It is part of the Chalcedony group of minerals.
Moss agate, like most gemstones, has long been used for personal decoration and jewellery making for centuries and had been given many attributes including in Britain that it was a stone of good luck, and it was often favourably regarded by gardeners, agricultural workers and farmers as lucky due to the frond like greenery in the gens resembling mini eternal plant structures. Moss agate is mined widely from Central Europe to Brazil and Uruguay to the USA and India.
